Reading Chronicle Thursday 2nd September

As normal at Bank Holiday weekends there were few matches on RDAA waters and last weekend was no different with only two matches on the venues. With the evenings becoming cooler and the days shorter the fish now should be packing on the weight to be ready for the first frosts of winter. The barbel enthusiasts are always ready for September and October when the fish should be at their heaviest.

Beat 5 at Berkeley Avenue in Reading hosted King Heron A.C. and this venue should be at its best at this time of the year. Silver fish are always abundant and Chris Humphries took first place with 10lbs 10 ozs of quality roach. These were taken on hemp and tares(seed baits)  fishing stick float. In second place was Ian Quelch with 7lbs 13ozs of roach and these were also taken on tares. Dave Ward took third place with a similar net of roach caught on tares to total 7lbs 8ozs.

Miles A.C. fished the Burghfield River section of the Kennet behind the Cunning Man public house and none of the resident barbel or chub put in an appearance which left the anglers searching for silver fish. In first place was Derek Fisher who placed exactly 4lbs on to the scales. In second place was Tony Prior with a silver fish net weighing in at 2lbs 4ozs and in third spot was Colin Thrower with 1bs 5ozs.

I have not mentioned in previous posts the “Tuesday Club” who fish the RDAA waters locally obviously on a Tuesday. Any RDAA member can come along and the only requisite is a current permit and £5.00 in your pocket you would like to lose. If you would like to join us ring Dave Bosher on 0774 829 8506 to book in. The match on Tuesday 24th August was fished on Padworth Canal and Mick Mills won with 6lbs 10ozs of  silver fish plus one tench. In second place was John Berry with a perch net totalling 5lbs 4ozs and in third place with 4lbs was Dave Bosher. The match ended on a sour note when returning to the cars the anglers found a large tree had come down in the high wind on three vehicles in the car park causing extensive damage to Mick Mills van another anglers car and your writers car.

Going on to Club matches but not on RDAA waters we start with Reading F.C. who fished a “silver fish only” match on their Tapperns  Lake at Theale.  Don Cox found the bream feeding and managed to put six into his keep net to weigh in 29lbs 2ozs and take first place. Bill Tucker took second place with 8lbs 3ozs which consisted of  one bream plus silver fish. 4lbs exactly saw Pete Godfrey take third position.

Reading Civil Service Fished Ben Drakes lake at Echinswell near Newbury and Ian Marcham  took the plaudits and first place with six carp to weigh in 30lbs 3ozs. Second place was taken by Vic Turner who weighed in15lbs 13ozs and Les Hannington took third spot weighing in10lbs 7ozs.

Courage/SE members contested the “Dusty Millar Trophy” on Maiden Erleigh Lake. Andy White tempted five carp to the net to win the match with 16lbs 14ozs. In second place was Ian Claridge with 11lbs 15ozs just 5 ozs in front of Mick Wells and Fred Jones who had 11lbs each. Dusty was the Chairman of the Club before he died two years ago and the trophy was presented by his family.

Unfortunately I finish with a word of warning from our angling colleagues in Thatcham where some unusual tackle thefts have occurred recently. Anglers have been approached by a male adult who tells them that cars are being broken into in the car park by children. The angler has gone to his car leaving his tackle on the bank being tended by the adult. Finding nothing happening in the car park he returns to find his fishing tackle and the person tending it gone.

Reading Chronicle Thursday 26th August

With some more rainfall in the week prior to last weekend Clubs were hopeful of a continued improvement on the local rivers, canals and lakes. The overnight rain on the Saturday managed to put some colour back into the water so hopes were high for some good catches.

Moving out of Reading westwards or upstream on the River Kennet with Beat 5 commencing on the road bridge across the river at Berkeley Avenue where the club here was Pangbourne & Whitchurch. Roach & perch show here in good numbers and Mark Slade proved this by taking first place with 5lbs 8ozs. A similar net saw Dave Dudman weighing in at 4lbs 14ozsto take second place only 8ozs in front of John Nicholls.

Moving on upstream to the Rose Kiln Lane road bridge where the venue is known as Beat 4 we meet up with Reading Fishing Club who found the roach in obliging mood. Len Wilby took first spot with 11lbs 10ozs, a very good weight for the venue. In second place, again with a roach net was Don Cox who weighed in 5lbs 9ozs. Bill Tucker took third place with 5lbs 3ozs but his net consisted of mainly perch.

Burghfield River (behind the Cunning Man on Burghfield Road) hosted Newtown A.C. from Bracknell. Pete Foster managed to take 3 decent chub plus perch and roach to weigh in 10lbs 7ozs to take first place. 4lbs 3ozs was enough to give Mick Wright second place and leave Terry Smith in third place weighing in 3lbs 9ozs.

The last match on the River Kennet was at Ufton River where Nine Elms A.C. fished their match.

Moored boats were a problem here and anglers had to be closer together than they would have liked to fit into the venue. This was probably the reason for the lower weights caused by the fish being cagey. Bob Knight won the match weighing in 2lbs 12ozs of silver fish. Second place saw a tie between Pete Schofield and Darren Williams who both weighed in 2lbs 8ozs each. There was also a tie for fourth position with Adrian Parker and Michael Gough both weighing in 1lbs 8ozs.

On to the River Thames and South Reading were the first RDAA Club to fish the recently acquired new water at Sandford Weir which is just outside Oxford. This venue needs some small works carried out on access and swims but RDAA have high hopes for it in the future. Duncan Bales won the match using pole and fishing hemp and tares which saw him put 8lbs 4ozs on to the scales. John Montgomery took second place with 5lbs 7ozs of silver fish. George Callaghan also had silver fish in his net of 5lbs 2ozs to take third place.

Tring Anglers found the stretch of RDAA water at Wallingford in superb form and hemp and tares ruled the day here. Brian Elliott led the way with a superb 22lbs 1oz of quality roach. Martin Rodwell was a very close second with 21lbs 15ozs and rues missing the fish that he did not bother netting  and subsequently escaped. Third place was taken by Dave Howe with 16lbs 14ozs.

Leaving RDAA waters Excelsior travelled to the carp ponds at Bowsaw Lake which is just outside of Odiham. Lloyd Moss managed to put some of its residents on to the bank and took first place with 125lbs. Ken Wright took second place with 98lbs 14ozs and Andy Crawford took third place with 86lbs 2ozs.

Reading Chronicle Thursday 19th August

There had been some long awaited rainfall in the week prior to last weekend and Clubs were hopeful of a continued improvement on the local rivers, canals  and lakes. The strong and gusty breeze on the Sunday caused some problems on the more open venues like the River Thames.

Courage /SE’s Specimen Group held a slightly different match at Mapledurham . The match commenced on Saturday afternoon , went through the night and completed at 10am on Sunday. Hopes were high for a large bream catch as there is a very significant sized shoal resident here and they normally show at night. Only one of the bream decided to play ball and along with a barbel Dave Philps weighed in 15lbs to take first place. He also landed a brown trout but these do not count in a match being game fish. Silver fish went to the rest of the anglers and with 1lb 12ozs  Sy Heighes took second place. Jezz Batt was third with silver fish weighing 12ozs.

There were three matches on the River Kennet and the first at Beat 3 (Fobney Island) saw King Heron take on the venue. No large fish were caught but it is good to see the silver fish returning. to the venue and with a roach and perch net Bill Gillham weighed in 7lbs 11ozs for first place. Jeff Fisher took second place with a similar net that took the scales around to 6lbs 9ozs. In third position was Ian Quelch with 6lbs 6ozs of silver fish.

Next match heading west was the Reading Civil Service one at Lower Benyons Yellow section.

Steve Alder took first place with 4lbs 6ozs of silver fish. In second place was Gordon McGhee with 3lbs 10ozs just ounces in front of third placed Ian Marcham. Several big fish were hooked but lost.

The last match on the Kennet was at Ufton River where Bracknell Avocets new member Andy Powell bought along his son to fish his first senior match as a junior. Neither of these could finish in the top three where Chris Bowman took top spot with 3lbs 8ozs of silver fish. Seven ounces behind in second place was Norman French to continue his role of being the “Bridesmaid and not the Bride”. Third place was taken by Richard. A. Herman with 2lbs 4ozs of “silvers”.

There were two matches on the River Thames. Prestcold had the longest journey travelling to Northmoor which is just south of Witney and RDAA’s most remote fishery. Several small barbel made up the weights the majority of which consisted of roach. Mark Stea dman took 7lbs 11ozs to the scales to take top spot. In second place was Geoff Eley with 5lbs 5ozs and in third place with 4lbs 11ozs was Tony Tibble.

Courage/SE’s match group were also on the Thames  at Wallingford and found the larger roach which the venue is well known for did not want to feed and were left catching smaller silver fish. First on the day was Ian Claridge who weighed in 3lbs 7ozs. In second place was Andy White with 2lbs 15ozs and equal third with 1ounce less were Mick Ketcher and Cliff Edwards.

Reading Chronicle Thursday 12th August

The River Kennet seemed to take second place to the Kennet & Avon Canal last weekend as RDAA had three matches on the Canal. The first of which was at the Froxfield venue just outside Hungerford.

Reading Civil Service held their match on the “A” section and with low water levels which led to the narrow boats churning the bottom mud up none of the bigger fish showed. Ian Marchant won the match with 5lbs 11ozs of small silver fish, mainly roach. Bill Blunden had a similar catch to take second place with 4lbs 10ozs. Gordon McGee took third place with 4lbs 3ozs.

Heading back towards Reading  and to Midgham Canal where  Nine Elms had the venue on Sunday and again found problems with the boats especially one that contained some young ladies on a hen weekend that bounced off the banks on its journey downstream. Mick Dance saw some bubbles come up from the bottom of the canal at the start of the match so decided to drop his bait over the top. Five minutes later he had a fine 5lbs 11ozs bream in his keepnet. He never had another bite and that one fish gave him first spot. Horace Parker took second place with a perch net that took the scales round to 4lbs 4ozs. One of the perch weighed a hefty 2lbs 8ozs. In third p[lace was Darren Williams with 2lbs 8ozs of silver fish.

The one match on Sunday on the River Kennet saw South Reading struggle somewhat as the bigger fish elected not to feed. This venue does fish better come the cooler months when the chub decide to feed but it is good to see the return of some silver fish in reasonable numbers to the river. George Callaghan led the way with 4lbs 9ozs of “silvers” taking first spot. In second place was Dave Brent just 4ozs behind George and also catching silver fish. Tony Parker took third place with a bream of 3lbs plus some “silvers” to weigh in 3lbs 13ozs.

The only other match on RDAA waters was at Wylies Lake in Thatcham where Caversham Working Mens Club struggled with the cloudless sky and clear water.  Steve Roberts managed to land one of the lakes resident tench and this took the scales around to 5lbs 12 ozs and won the match for him. With no other tench caught Andrew Thumbwood  took second place with 1lbs 4ozs of small roach, rudd and perch. Third place went to Dave McCormack  with 6ozs of “bits”.

On the Saturday Excelsior fished their stretch of the Thames at Hardwick Estate and found the going hard. All of the anglers caught small silver fish with no bream showing on the day. In first place with 5lbs exactly was John Allum. 3lbs 4ozs of “silvers” was enough to give Alan Cowell second place and third place with 3lbs exactly saw a tie between George Smith and “Jock” Turner.

Reading Chronicle Thursday 5th August

Last Sunday saw the second RDAA match of the current season. Sixty anglers fought it out for the Preservation Cup and the Claw Scaffold Trophy.

The match day weather was dry, overcast, humid with a moderate breeze blowing. The River Kennet had a good colour and was flowing slowly. Total match weight on the day was 189lbs 5ozs 0drms, (at an average weight of 3lbs 15ozs per Angler). This continues the increased weights that the July match resulted in.

The top three teams on the day were Reading Fishing Club with 43lbs 0ozs 0drms, Prestcold AC with 26lbs 12ozs 0drms and Reading Civil Service with 25lbs 10ozs 0drms. Many thanks to all those that turned out on the day.

The Match was won by Steve Drakeford of  Prestcold AC. Fishing the top peg on Beat “3B”, (Backwater), section, Steve banked one barbel of 6lbs along with roach and perch during the course of the match, fishing a combination of stick float and maggot feeder tactics with single and double yellow and red maggots on the hook to record a weight of 11-1-0.

Justin Mabere of Reading Fishing Club was second overall. Fishing the first peg upstream of the “Weirpool” on Beat “3A” section, Justin banked five chub to 4lbs and silver fish during the course of the match, fishing waggler tactics with single and double bronze maggot on the hook to record a weight of 10-0-0.

Tony Tibble of South Reading AC and Alan Tucker of Reading Civil Service were joint third overall, both recorded a weight of 9-11-0.

Tony who was fishing the first peg below the “Concrete Blocks” on Beat “5A” section banked a mainly Roach catch during the course of the match, fishing stick float tactics with single caster on the hook  (over hemp).

Alan who was fishing the second peg downstream from the top of Beat “3B”, (Backwater), section, banked a Barbel of 8-5-0 along with bits during the course of the match, fishing a combination of stick float and maggot feeder tactics with single and double red maggot on

the hook.

Reading Fishing Club top the Club Championship table with a weight of 74lbs 12ozs, in second place is Reading Civil Service with a weight of 57lbs 6ozs and Courage/ SE Angling Club lie in third with 46lbs 5ozs just ahead of King Heron.

Tony Tibble leads the Individual Weight trophy with 26lbs 11ozs. Bill Blunden holds second place with  24lbs 11ozs and with 16lbs 12ozs come Paul Mason.

Tony Tibble and Graham Hawkins lead the points table both with 20 points each after winning  their sections in the two matches.

Staying with RDAA Excelsior fished the Red section of Lower Benyons on Saturday  where Tony Capewell and  Alan Cowell tied for top spot both of them weighing in 5lbs 8ozs of similar catches, mixed small silver fish and some larger perch. Third place went to John Allum with 4lbs 8ozs.
